Have you always wanted to be a designer of jade jewellery?

I studied graphics and media in London, because I loved colour and drawing from an early age. Becoming a designer in jade would have been a logical step after graduating because our whole family was involved in the jade business, starting with my grandfather in Guangzhou.

How did you enter this business?


A
Like a lot of Hong Kong children, I had a small jade disc that I have worn since I was a baby. I literally grew up with jade because my grandfather and uncles were in the business.

After a few years in advertising, my uncle, Edward Chiu, asked me to join his jewellery company. I worked in his retail store as his assistant, taking care of everything from visiting workshops to designing and purchasing raw jade.

What influences your philosophy of design and life?


A
My uncle was a huge influence on me. He was very strict about training, especially when it came to presentation, even your personal presentation. I learned so much about jewellery design by watching him and helping him with ideas for new jewellery pieces.

I am also inspired by Buddhism and the idea that we should all be like gardeners — attentive and mindful of the plants they care for. In the same way, I am mindful of the designs I create and the joy they can bring to people.

Where do you get your inspiration?


A
After graduating, I took a course on jade and read many books to understand the meaning and symbolism of traditional Chinese motifs, such as the lotus and fish. But I’ve also been exposed to the West, so you could say I’ve been inspired by both cultures. Mostly, though, I get inspiration from my customers

What makes your jewellery different?


A
Like fashion, jewellery is very personal. Fortunately, my customers like my style because it works well for daily wear; it’s more carefree and casual and can fit into your everyday life. Unlike mass-produced jewellery, my jewellery is not mainstream but can complement a person’s unique character.

What keeps you going?


A
I enjoy meeting new people and seeing old customers return to my store. I especially enjoy sharing my knowledge with overseas customers, who appreciate Chinese culture. I value the relationships I’ve developed over the years with them. I’m fortunate that I love running JADE LIFE, as it has become my life’s passion.
